This week in sports Oct. 8

Boys Soccer

Emerson

Boys soccer finished the week 0-2 with a 2-1 loss to Ridgefield on Oct. 1 and a 5-1 loss to Leonia on Oct. 3. Zac Azmi scored two goals in the week and Kevin Benny recorded 25 saves.

Park Ridge

The Owls went 1-1-0 for the week with a 2-2 tie against Cresskill on Oct. 2 and a 1-0 victory over Palisades Park on Oct. 3. Andrew Kirshteyn scored two goals and Brian Sloan recorded 14 saves for the week.

Pascack Hills

Pascack Hills finished 1-1 for the week with a 1-0 win over Waldwick on Oct. 2 and a 4-0 loss to Fair Lawn on Oct. 3. Jason Winikoff 22 saves in the week.

Pascack Valley

On Friday, Oct. 3, Northern Highlands defeated Pascack Valley 2-0. Brian Lango recorded six saves.

St. Joseph Regional

The Green Knights were undefeated this week with a 1-0 win against Bloomfield on Oct. 1 and a 6-1 victory over Barringer on Oct. 3. Ismael Giusfredi scored four goals and had one assist in the week and Julian Nazario recorded 14 saves.

Westwood

On Thursday, Oct. 2, Cliffside Park defeated Westwood 2-1. Gregg Hackbarth scored the Cardinals’ single goal with an assist from Sam Grbic. John Seligman recorded seven saves in the game.

Girls Soccer

Emerson

Girls soccer went 2-1 for the week with a 1-0 victory over Ridgefield on Sept. 29 and 5-1 win against Dwight-Englewood on Oct. 3, and a 4-1 defeat to Glen Rock at the first round of the Bergen County Girls Tournament on Oct. 5. Marissa Cerniglia scored two goals and an assist and Samantha Lev scored two goals for the week. Victoria Berg recorded 27 saves in the three games.

IHA

IHA continued its undefeated season, winning three more games in the week with a 8-0 victory over Belleville on Sept. 30, a 7-0 defeat over Nutley on Oct. 1, and a 9-0 win against Bloomfield on Oct. 3. Rachel Wechsler and Tara Schwitter scored five goals each in the week.

Park Ridge

Girls soccer finished 0-1-1 for the week with a scoreless tie against Leonia on Oct. 2 and a 3-1 loss to Ramsey on Oct. 4. Jillian Lucanie scored the lone goal for the week with an assist from Antoinette Galdo.

Pascack Hills

Pascack Hills was undefeated this week with a 5-0 win over Fair Lawn on Oct. 2 and a 3-1 victory over Tenafly at the first round of the Bergen County Girls Tournament on Oct. 5. Olivia Habicht and Julianne Funtsch scored two goals each in the week and Meredith Schlussel recorded 18 saves.

Pascack Valley

Girls soccer went 1-1 for the week with a 3-0 loss to Northern Highlands on Oct. 2 and a 3-0 win against Bergen Tech at the first round of the Bergen County Girls Tournament on Oct. 5. Melissa McKeary, Pamela Vangelas, and Ashley Delaney each scored one goal. Traci Corra recorded 14 saves in the week.

Westwood

Westwood finished 1-1 for the week with a 6-0 win against Cliffside Park on Oct. 3 and a 6-0 loss to Paramus at the first round of the Bergen County Girls Tournament on Oct. 5. Kaila Fasano scored three goals and Stephanie Senkevich recorded eight saves in the week.

Football

St. Joseph Regional

On Saturday, Oct. 4, St. Joseph Regional dominated Eastside with a 48-6 victory. In the first quarter, Kevin Adams scored a touchdown on a 26-yard pass from Gabe Hernadez and an extra point by David Wood. Sean Hurley’s 10-yard fumble recovery and Wood’s 37-yard pass from Hernandez with two extra points gave the team a 28-0 lead going into the second quarter. A touchdown on a 33-yard pass from Hernandez by Kai Dominguez and an extra point by Sean Roe, followed by Ryan Donohue’s 2-yard run and Joseph Checke’s kick in the second quarter increased the lead 42-0. In the third, Laquan Middletons’ 6-yard run gave the Green Knights a 48-0 lead until Eastside scored a single touchdown in the fourth, but finishing the game with a 48-6 win for St. Joseph Regional.

Park Ridge

On Saturday, Oct. 4, Park Ridge defeated Ridgefield 39-8, improving their record to 3-0. In the first quarter, Matt Moreno scored a 5-yard touchdown followed by Chris Entrup’s 16-yard pass from Matt Misley for a second touchdown. In the second quarter, Moreno scored on a 7-yard run touchdown and Kevin Hwang scored on a 42-yard pass from Misley with an extra point by Luis Cardoso. In the third quarter, Hwang scored again on a 16-yard pass from Misley. A third touchdown from Moreno with a 48-yard fumble recovery and extra point by Cardoso gave the Owls a 39-8 final score for the win. 

Pascack Hills

On Saturday, Oct. 4, Wallington defeated Pascack Hills 24-14. After a touchdown in the first quarter for Wallington, Pascack Hills responded with a 42-yard run touchdown by Ryan Hansen and extra point run from Hugh Kirwan. In the fourth, Hansen scored again on a 2-yard run, but it was not enough to defeat Wallington.

Pascack Valley

On Saturday, Oct. 4, Pascack Valley defeated Old Tappan 38-23. In the first quarter, Kevin Rems scored on a 25-yard run with an extra point by Kyle Hartwick. In the second quarter, Tommy Cora scored two touchdowns with a 6-yard run and a 100-yard interception return. With two extra points and a 20-yard field goal by Hartwick, Pascack Valley led 24-0 going into the second half. In the third quarter, Rems scored two more touchdowns on a 13-yard run and 4-yard run with extra points for the 38-23 victory. The team is 4-0 for the season.

Westwood

On Saturday, Oct. 4, River Dell defeated Westwood 14-0.

Cross-Country

Park Ridge

On Thursday, Oct. 2, boys finished with 15 points to Dwight-Englewood with 40. Steven Sagona placed first with 17:50, Chris Walker finished second with 18:30, Travis Cwirko placed third with 18:45, Chris Nunes placed fourth with 19:08, and Greg Hoffman placed fifth with 19:49. Girls finished with 50 points to Dwight-Englewood with 15 points. Melissa Origoni placed first with 21:25 and Molly McKendry placed second with 23:30.

Pascack Hills

On Thursday, Oct. 2, boys finished with 19 points to Mahwah with 44 points and with 21 points to Northern Highlands with 36 points. Taylor Trumbetti placed first with 16:47, Dave Puleo placed fourth with 17:59, Mike Tillison placed fifth with 18:06, and Joe Sabatino placed seventh with 18:21. Girls finished with 33 points to Mahwah with 22 points and with 34 points to Northern Highlands with 21. Krista LaRezza placed sixth with 21:14.

Pascack Valley

On Thursday, Oct. 2, boys finished with 18 points to Bergenfield with 45 points and with 33 points to Ramsey with 23 points. Luke Nowicki finished second with 17:28 and Dan Pescatore placed fifth with 18:13. Girls finished with 15 points to Bergenfield’s 41 points and with 47 points to Ramsey’s 15 points. Christa McLeod placed seventh with 23:34.

Westwood

On Thursday, Oct. 2, boys finished with 27 points to Rutherford’s 28 and with 31 points to Fort Lee’s 26. Louie Schiedeler placed first with 16:40, Zack Mower placed third with 17:28, and Dan Murtaugh placed seventh with 18:06. Girls finished with 24 points to Rutherford’s 31 and with 17 points to Fort Lee’s 44. Teresa Gagliostro placed first with 20:17, Ceili Brennan placed second with 20:19, and Meghan Kocher placed fourth with 22:21.

Girls Volleyball

Emerson

Girls volleyball finished 0-2 for the week with a 2-1 loss to Park Ridge on Oct. 2 and a 2-0 loss to Cresskill on Oct. 3. Monica Lee recorded 26 assists for the week.

IHA

IHA went undefeated this week with three wins including a 2-0 victory over Nutley on Oct. 1, a 2-0 win against Bloomfield on Oct. 2, and a 2-0 defeat over Mahwah on Oct. 3. Kristin Flatekval recorded 53 assists, Stephanie Cruz recorded 20 digs, and Ariel Scott recorded 30 kills.

Park Ridge

Girls volleyball finished 1-1 for the week with a 2-1 victory over Emerson on Oct. 2 and a 2-1 loss to New Milford on Oct.3. Jessica Bolella recorded 25 assists, Brielle Buckman recorded 21 digs and 11 kills, and Kelsey Wimmershoff recorded 29 digs and 16 kills.

Pascack Hills

On Thursday, Oct. 2, Fair Lawn defeated Pascack Hills 2-1. Jessica Lomia recorded 19 assists, Megan McNally recorded eight digs, and Corinne Palmer recorded 10 kills.

Pascack Valley

On Thursday, Oct. 2, Northern Highlands defeated Pascack Valley 2-1. Kristen Forget recorded 10 assists, Stephanie Schneider recorded 16 digs, and Alyssa Hoodendorn recorded nine kills.

Westwood

Westwood went 1-1 for the week with a 2-0 win against Cliffside Park on Oct. 3 and a 2-0 loss to Mahwah on Oct. 4. Haley Dukes recorded 15 kills for the week.

Girls Tennis

Emerson

Emerson went 0-2 for the week with a 4-1 loss to New Milford on Oct. 2 and a 3-2 defeat by Leonia on Oct. 3. Against New Milford, Erin Abrams and Eunice Yo defeated their opponents 8-6. Against Leonia, Misha Patel defeated her opponent 7-5, 7-5 in singles, and in doubles, Gladys Wu and Yo defeated their opponents 6-2, 6-0.

IHA

On Wednesday, Oct. 1, IHA defeated Nutley 5-0. Kaitlin Pfisterer defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-1. Dana Ferrari defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Lia Barber defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Lauren Iannelli and Carly Piccinich defeated their opponents 6-0, 6-0, and Hayley Downing and Anny Lee Rice defeated their opponents 6-3, 5-1.

Park Ridge

Park Ridge finished 0-2 for the week with a 5-0 loss to Cresskill on Oct. 2 and a 4-1 loss to Fair Lawn on Oct. 3. Lauren Mazzei defeated her Fair Lawn opponent 6-1, 6-1.

Pascack Hills

On Friday, Oct. 3, Tenafly defeated Pascack Hills 3-2. Michelle Feldman defeated her opponent 3-6, 7-5, 4-2 and Harli Thau and Dani Stern defeated their opponents 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Pascack Valley

On Thursday, Oct. 2, Ramsey defeated Pascack Valley 4-0.

Westwood

Westwood finished 2-0 for the week with a 3-2 victory over New Milford on Sept. 29 and a 5-0 win against Ridgefield Park on Oct. 2. Against New Milford, Ilana Asserson defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-0. Chelsea Raigo defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-2. Siwoo Kim and Kyla Nast defeated their opponents 6-3, 6-0. Against Ridgefield Park, Laura Arietta defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Asserson defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Raigo defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Nast and Jackie Ciccolella defeated their opponents 6-3, 6-3. Karni Semerjian and Samantha Rissetto defeated their opponents 6-2.

Field hockey

Westwood

On Thursday, Oct. 2, Wayne Hills defeated Westwood 4-0. Elizabeth Figureido recorded 13 saves in the game. On Wednesday, Sept. 24, Westwood beat Hackensack 3-0. Defender Katie Bates scored one goal and had two assists, and against Demarest on Saturday, Oct. 4, the team suffered a 4-2 loss but Bates had two more assists.

Gymnastics

Pascack Valley

On Saturday, Oct. 4, Pascack Valley finished with 109.65 to Montclair with 68. Lindsay Bloom placed first on the vault with 9.45, Taylor Sifti placed first in the floor routine with 9.325 and first all around with 35.825, and Meagan Phelan placed first on the uneven bars with 9.475 and first on the balance beam with 9.55. The team is 5-0 for the season.
