Architect makes solar panel presentation

(by Kathryn A. Burger - October 15, 2008)

The installation of solar panels that would generate electricity for the Park Ridge School District and have the potential to not only reduce energy costs but generate revenue was discussed at the Monday, Oct. 13 board of education meeting.

Architect Joseph Di Cara made a presentation that provided information specific to the district’s three schools. The infrastructure improvements – new roofs, windows, and upgrades to the HVAC in the three schools were discussed. These improvements, Di Cara said, would, ideally, all be completed prior to the installation of the panels.

As previously reported, the solar panel initiative could be a benefit to school districts and businesses throughout the state due to a complex and relatively new plan derived from the state’s commitment to alternative power-generating strategies.

The board is now reviewing the data presented, which includes cost estimates for the infrastructure improvements and the purchase and installation of the panels.

A summary of the cost estimates for the infrastructure improvements included:

Roof replacements at all three schools - $2,983,000

Window replacement at all three schools - $2,488,000

Upgrades to HVAC at all three schools - $1,390,000 to $1,625,000

According to a Di Cara, and the text of the presentation, the cost of panels and their installation would not increase taxes. This is possible, he said, through a combination of savings on energy costs over time and state incentives.

The board of education meets next on Monday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. in the high school library.
