Coming soon: turf field at Hills

(by Walt Brown - October 10, 2007)

The Pascack Valley Regional Board of Education approved the installation of the artificial turf field and lights along with track improvements at its last meeting, held Monday, Oct. 1.

In all, the cost will be $1,328,675 for the installation of the turf and the resurfacing of the track, and an additional $188,000 for the installation of the lights. Construction is expected to begin shortly and is slated to take two to two and one half months, depending on the weather.

Trustee Maura Ellis questioned the lighting-fixture expenditures, inasmuch as there had been an understanding that the project would not go forward if the athletic department at Pascack Hills did not raise enough money to pay for the lights. It was learned that Pascack Valley raised approximately $36,000, but had greater immediate athletic priorities than the field at Hills. Hills raised $135,000, almost three-quarters of the necessary total. Ellis did not agree on that portion of the spending package.

Superintendent Benedict Tantillo said the work is necessary for the athletic programs. “We’re essentially landlocked, so we cannot create more fields. If there is one good rainstorm, everything we have may be unusable for at least a week. With the turf, we have a sizable area for our football program, and it can certainly be used by others.”

In an effort to facilitate the work, athletic officials at Pascack Hills High School have altered the schedule so that there won’t be anymore home football games this season.
