Sprint antennas still on hold

(by Megan Burrow - December 19, 2007)

The discussion on whether to allow Sprint Spectrum to install new antennas and cable lines in Hillsdale continued at the Tuesday Dec 4 council meeting.

Bill Doughty, an employee of Pyramid Network Services, a company working on behalf of Sprint to upgrade their existing sites, presented the company’s plans to the council members. Sprint is asking for Hillsdale’s consent to update their technology on the tower located behind the firehouse on Hillsdale Avenue. They are seeking to install two new equipment cabinets and replace the existing six antennas with nine new ones. The new equipment would not require any additional space on the tower.

Councilman Max Arnowitz expressed concerns the new antennas might interfere with police and fire communications, which are located on the same tower. Also, Arnowitz raised questions on how the new installation would impact the ability of other providers to add antennas. Doughty told Arnowitz the additional equipment should not interfere.

“I would like assurances from the organization in writing that if there are problems with police communications it will be corrected at your expense,” Arnowitz said.

There will be no action taken on this issue until an engineer and the borough attorney both review the plans and can report back to council.
