Residents and volunteers honored
(by Megan Burrow - December 12, 2007)
At the Tuesday, Dec. 4 council meeting several residents and prominent members of the Hillsdale community received awards and commendations for their service to the town.
Mayor Dennis Deutsch presented long-time resident Emile Stonkey with a certificate in celebration of his 100th birthday. The mayor said Stonkey has resided in Hillsdale his entire life, and was “born in the living room of the house in which he still lives.” Everyone in attendance sang “Happy Birthday,” and Stonkey played along with his harmonica.
Hillsdale Superintendent Anthony DeNorchia was honored with a certificate in recognition for being named New Jersey Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators. The Police Department recognized Patrolman Tom Smith with a commendation award for his role in the arrests of two career criminals responsible for numerous car burglaries and stolen vehicles in the

Valley area. Police Chief Chip Stalter praised Smith for his “diligence and observations,” which led to the arrests.
The Hillsdale Council also recognized Barbara Ann DeCaro, Dr. Susan Kushner, Dr. Martha Maso, Marilyn Perrine, Dr. Michael Rutigliano, James Stephens, Dr. David Stewart, and Dr. Michael Yellen, who volunteer their time and services each year to the Hillsdale Board of Health.
Finally, Borough Administrator Harold Karns was congratulated on winning the New Jersey Municipal Management award. Karns, the administrator since 1998, “changed the entire attitude of the governing body,” said Deutsch, making it a much more “pleasant, informative, and functional entity for residents.”
