Budget cap ordinance passed
(by Kevin Glynn - January 23, 2008)
The Hillsdale Mayor and Council passed an ordinance on first reading on Tuesday, Jan. 15 to increase the budget CAP from 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent.
The state controls how much certain budgetary items can increase, limiting them to 2.5 percent. Due to fixed costs, such as pension and utilities, which increase more than the CAP allows, however, the state allows towns to pass this ordinance to increase the CAP by one percent each year.
Borough Administrator Harold Karns said that in Hillsdale’s case, the one percent increase will provide the borough with an additional $77,000, if necessary.
