United Water’s water main project is moving forward

(by Megan Burrow - January 30, 2008)

The water main running under Washington Avenue will be extended in the spring, increasing water capacity for fire protection and increasing pressure in time for the summer peak months. Representatives from United Water were in attendance at Monday’s council meeting to discuss their plans for the project and gain approval from the council to move ahead. United Water acknowledged that working on Washington Avenue will cause traffic disruptions, but said there are strategic connections at that location that are critical for increased water flow.

Councilwoman Janet Sobkowicz asked if someone would look at the main before extending it to make sure it can handle the increased pressure. “I’m concerned because there have been a number of breaks along the same stretch,” Sobkowicz said. Councilman Robert Schroeder expressed particular concern about a stretch of road on Jackson Avenue. “There have been five breaks in a row, and there are blisters on the road, I don’t know how it will handle the increased flow.”

Going forward, United Water and the borough will work together to coordinate main replacements with paving projects. The project will begin sometime in March on Colonial Boulevard and will coincide with student’s spring break to ease congestion and cause as little disruption as possible.
