Municipal budget slated for introduction on Feb. 25

(by Maggie Fazeli Fard - February 13, 2008)

A month of budget meetings came to a close on Saturday. A municipal budget reflecting a 2.2 percent spending increase and an average tax increase of $38 per household is scheduled for introduction at the council’s Feb. 25 meeting.

“We were able to do many projects,” Mayor Joseph Blundo said at the council’s Feb. 11 meeting, including the township’s road improvement program, a joint venture with Old Tappan to create a skateboard park and a modernized alarm system to replace the now antiquated, and much complained about, air raid system used in cases of emergency.

Additionally, said Blundo, the township was able to absorb a five percent increase in “uncontrollable costs,” which include contractual and state obligations.

The budget will be introduced on Monday, Feb. 25 with a second reading and final passage expected on Monday, March 24.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to do this,” said Blundo. “Not only come in on time, but ahead of time.”
