Hillsdale Councilman William V. Kirk passed away on Friday, Feb. 15 from a cardiac episode. Maria, his wife of 39 years, said her husband had a preexisting condition. He was 64.
A retired principal of the New York City Public School System, Kirk began his career in education in 1965 as a teacher. He went on to get his master’s degree in English as a Second Language (ESL), became assistant principal, and retired as a New York City principal four years ago.
As for public service, Kirk was elected to the school board several years ago, serving part of his term as president, prior to his election to borough council this past November.
In a letter to the editor, Hillsdale Mayor John Sapanara called Kirk a “dedicated family man, concerned citizen, and passionate public official.”
Mr. Kirk is survived by his wife, Maria, his children David and Lauren, and siblings Stephen, Maryellin and Nancy.
The Hillsdale Council will select one of three candidates provided by the Hillsdale Republican County Committee to serve on the council for this year. A replacement for the remaining two years will be decided by the voters in November.
“Mr. Kirk entered public service for all the right reasons: to better the community he lived in and improve the lives of the people he served,” Sapanara wrote. “Our borough, our council and I will miss him.”
