Basic skills program is focus of Thursday, Feb. 28 meeting

(by Kathryn A. Burger - February 27, 2008)
At the Feb. 25 board of education meeting, a parent asked the board about a rumor she’d heard that the basic skills program in the district was being eliminated. Patricia Johnson, superintendent of schools, responded emphatically. “We are not doing away with the program. We are restructuring the basic skills program.”

She said parents of students who receive basic skills instruction had been invited to a special meeting at which administrators would discuss anticipated changes in the structure of the program.

Basic skills instruction is provided to general education students who need remedial help in math and/or language arts. Johnson said basic skills instruction in the elementary grades is provided by teachers hired specifically to teach basic skills. Middle and high school students receive basic skills instruction from faculty members with certifications in math and language arts, who assume the responsibility for basic skills instruction in those disciplines, she said.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, Feb. 28 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the high school’s Little Theater. Johnson said, while the meeting is intended for the parents of students who receive basic skills instruction, those with an interest in learning more about the program and its restructuring are welcome to attend.
