Ramp application for seniors approved despite objections

The township will move forward on submitting a Community Development block grant application for a ramp intended for use by the Golden Seniors.

The senior group currently meets in the municipal complex, but has long struggled with a parking shortage, forcing seniors to park on adjacent side streets and in part of the Oritani Savings Bank parking lot. The application would propose creating a ramp between the bank parking lot and the municipal building to aid seniors in getting to their meetings.

There is no assurance that the project, estimated at $56,000, will be approved. At Monday’s meeting, however, Councilman Joseph Giardina spoke out against the application, saying that the cost was unreasonable and the funds could be better used elsewhere.

Council President Robert Schroeder said he believed the ramp was important to aid the seniors. Schroeder and council members Janet Sobkowicz and Rich Hrbek also supported the application and it passed by a vote of three to one.
