Fieldstone traffic issue left unresolved after joint meeting

(by Maggie Fazeli Fard - February 28, 2008)

Two weeks after an ordinance aiming to control pick-up traffic in the vicinity of Fieldstone Middle School died on first reading, the Montvale Mayor and Council held a joint meeting with members of the Board of Education (BOE), parents and residents of area streets.

The ordinance would have opened up the south side of Hilton Place, where stopping, standing and parking are currently prohibited on both sides, to after school traffic in exchange for closing off one side of Edgren Way, where stopping, standing and parking are currently permitted on both sides.

The ordinance died on first reading after council members said they needed more information before implementing new rules that could have a “ricochet effect,” worsening conditions on other roads.

After more than one hour of discussion, the resounding cry from residents of both Edgren Way and Hilton Place, was that pick-ups should not take place on residential streets.

More than 400 students attend Fieldstone and less than half of them get picked up after school. As the school is not equipped to handle the traffic that would be diverted from the side streets, the request to close off both Edgren and Hilton to parents and guardians was denied.

Mayor Roger Fyfe suggested that the borough recommence smaller subcommittee meetings, including council and BOE members, to discuss other possible solutions.
