Borough Hall expansion is a no-go

(by Karen F. Mrnarevic - March 19, 2008)

On March 17, the Woodcliff Lake Council voted against the recommendation of a committee proposing an approximately $987,000 expansion of the Borough Hall.

At the March 3 meeting of the mayor and council, Gus Morpurgo, an architect for the borough, was present to make a public presentation on the expansion. He detailed the current situation in Borough Hall and why borough employees and officials were seeking a renovation, and went over the favored of three proposed plans.

The presentation was met with public reactions ranging from skepticism to outright disdain. Those in dissent do not believe now is the best time to invest in an expansion of borough hall, which they consider to be a luxury rather than a necessity.

It appears that the majority of council members heeded the residents’ comments; the resolution to authorize the expansion was defeated by a vote of four to two. The two councilmen who served on the committee appointed to analyze the issue of the expansion, Jeff Bader and John Glaser, voted to pass the resolution. Council members Joanne Howley, Josephine Higgins, Paul Camella and Bob Rosenblatt voted against it.
