Land swap ordinance introduced

(by Megan Burrow - March 19, 2008)

In an effort to move along the prolonged discussion of a land swap between the borough and Palisades Land & Management LLC, the council introduced an ordinance on Tuesday authorizing the exchange.

The land Palisades is looking to acquire is located adjacent to the firehouse, on the corner of Center and Jefferson avenues. In exchange, the fire department would receive a parcel of land that would make the fire department’s current area wider and less irregularly shaped.

If the swap were approved, Palisades would demolish the buildings currently on the corner and erect a new three-story structure. The first two stories would be used for offices, with the third containing three two-bedroom apartments.

Council members Ingrid Quinn and William Phayre recused themselves from the vote because of their connection with the fire department and Council President Cynthia Waneck abstained because of a concern with the language of the ordinance.

A hearing for the ordinance will be held at a May 6 work session. The hearing had to be delayed until this later date because of a scheduling problem with John J. Lamb, Palisade’s attorney.
