Board reaffirms data sharing with police

(by Walt Brown - September 12, 2007)

The Uniform State Memorandum of Agreement between the Pascack Valley Regional District and the police chiefs of the four sending districts was renewed at the Sept. 4 Regional Board of Education meeting.

School Superintendent Benedict Tantillo met with all four police chiefs to reach the agreement, which is virtually identical to that which has been in place for the past eight years, but it must, by law, be re-enacted on a yearly basis.

This past winter, a number of students were suspended from extra-curricular activities, clubs, or sports because of the "we share/they share" agreement, as it was styled by Tantillo. Because of those suspensions, a new policy guideline review was undertaken by the district’s policy committee. Although no report has been issued since the winter meetings, Tantillo said the report will feature amended wording but leave existing policies in place.

"If a student does something outside of school that can have an impact on the operation of the school," Tantillo said, "then the school can take disciplinary action."

Tantillo also spoke of two vehicles by which the school community has attempted to create an awareness of the policy, since last January’s concerns stemmed in part from a stated lack of policy knowledge. "They have all," indicating the entire student body, "had the policy sent home," Tantillo said.

"If they choose to participate in any extra-curricular activities, any clubs, or any sports, then it’s not just a mailing, but a signed statement by both parents and students that they have read and understood the policy," Tantillo concluded.
