Hills to hire AD, asst. principal
(by Walt Brown - April 02, 2008)
Pascack Hills Athletic Director Owen Haveron has decided to return to the classroom full-time, so a search is currently underway in the Pascack Valley Regional District to find someone who can fill the vacancy and serve as an assistant principal as well.
“That was the position I held,” District Superintendent Benedict Tantillo, Ph.D. said, referring to when he was the athletic director and vice principal at a former school site.
“Owen Haveron was teaching part time, so he was not in the fullest sense a ‘full-time’ athletic director.’ At the same time, the school population at Pascack Hills does not meet the requirements that the board considers necessary to hire a second full-time assistant principal,” Tantillo said.
Speaking from first-hand experience, Tantillo said that an experienced head coach who also holds an administrative certificate would be able to assist the administration in countless ways while still being able to manage the athletic program.
“We would never do anything to impinge on our program,” he cautioned. “We’ve been working on facilities, equipment, coaches, and we’ll continue to seek the athletic excellence – and successes – that we’ve achieved over the last few years. But someone who could also be an administrator could help as our faculty grows, with teacher observations, scheduling, oversight in various capacities, and athletics,” he said.
It is expected that the new athletic director/assistant principal will begin his or her duties this summer.
