Historic commission members appointed
(by Megan Burrow - May 28, 2008)
The members of the newly created Historic Commission were appointed and sworn in at the May 20 council meeting.
The commission was created with the goal of preserving, enhancing, and protecting the borough’s historically significant buildings and districts.
The six members are Michael Lewis (class C), George Mulhauser (class B), Linda Salib (class B), Julie Carmelich (class A), Anne Costello (class B), and Beth Staples (class C). Lewis and Mulhauser’s terms expire Dec. 31, 2009, Salib and Carmelich’s will expire Dec. 31, 2010, and Costello and Staples’ will expire Dec. 31, 2011.
Council President Cindy Waneck, the council’s land use committee liaison, had initially led the discussion to create the commission in order to preserve the character of the borough. The commission may make it easier for Westwood to obtain grants and funding for projects such as restoring the gazebo and train station.
The committee will serve in an advisory capacity to the planning and zoning boards. It will review pending applications for alterations, additions, and demolitions of town buildings and make its recommendations. The boards will still make the ultimate decision on applications.
