Jaclyn Masterson finished the season with a 17-2 record in the circle.

The Park Ridge Owls could not overcome the performance of the Pompton Lakes Cardinals at the sectional softball championship on Thursday, May 29, losing 8-3.

“When you get down three runs early to a team like this, it is hard to come back. We had to take some chances that we didn’t want to take defensively. It happens. Today they were the better team,” said Coach Frank Baldino.

Going into the game, pitcher Jaclyn Masterson had a 17-1 record in the circle. Unfortunately, she could not match the pitching successes of senior Chelsea Ott of Pompton Lakes .

After the Cardinals scored four runs in the first inning, the Owls knew they had to rally to try to come back to beat their confident opponents.

By the end of the third inning, Pompton Lakes had added another four runs, building up an 8-0 lead. Park Ridge drove in three runs in the remainder of the game, but it was not enough to win them the North 1, Group 1 title.

Despite the loss, Baldino remains optimistic for next season. “I wish the outcome would have been different, but we faced a very good team. We had a great season. We won our league, which was not easy, and it was a total team effort where every kid contributed on a game to game basis. The future is bright.”
