Peter J. Mauro was recently promoted to sergeant in the Park Ridge Police Department. A nine-year veteran of the department, he grew up in Park Ridge . Above right, Mayor Donald Ruschman administers the oath of office as Mauro’s wife, Patty; daughter Dorothy, and son PJ hold the Bible. Council member Joeen Ciannella looks on from the dais. Peter Mauro always wanted to be a police officer – but only in his hometown of Park Ridge.

Now, the nine-year veteran of the force has moved up the ranks and is a sergeant, and, although he no longer lives in the borough (he lives nearby), serving on the Park Ridge police force has been all he had hoped it would be, and then some.

His route to law enforcement was not a “straight line.”

“I graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in fire protection and safety engineering and worked for Schering-Plough,” an international research-based development and manufacturing company, “as a site safety supervisor specializing in construction safety.” During his eight-year tenure there, he also earned a master’s degree in industrial engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. But he still harbored the desire to be a Park Ridge police officer.

In 1998, he took the Civil Service test and was one of the top scorers. After a lengthy application and interview process, he was offered the job he had always wanted and joined the force in January of 1999.

What has followed, according to Chief of Police Joseph Madden, has been an exemplary career. “During his tenure, he has served as our D.A.R.E. officer, firearms instructor and has been very active with our Computer Services division. He was also a very effective patrol officer,” he said. “His leadership skills will help him be a great supervisor.”

Mauro said, “I’ve been very involved in computers within the department. I’m the TAC officer, which means I have to train all the officers on the National Crime Information Computer which we use for background checks, entering missing persons and stolen property, etc. I also participated with Chief Madden, when he was captain, in selecting the InfoCop computer system that we use in our patrol cars. I’m also on bike patrol, along with projects such as Community Policing. I’ve been involved with D.A.R.E. since 2002 and am now ‘passing the torch’ to Officer [Scott] Malloy for day-to-day operations, but I hope I can stay involved in the program because it really is one of the best parts of the job.”

As a sergeant, Mauro is now part of the chain of command. He and the department’s other two sergeants are all shift commanders, and he is looking forward to his new responsibilities. “This is what I love to do. I really don’t feel as though I’m ‘at work’ when I’m on duty. It’s a part of my life.”
