Borough considers installing more efficient LED streetlights

(by Megan Burrow - June 17, 2008)

Borough officials met with a Texas based manufacturer of light-emitting diodes or LEDs last Wednesday to discuss installing a small number of LED streetlights in Westwood.

Borough Administrator Bob Hoffmann commented that initially the pilot program would probably involve installing the LED lamps along one street. The borough would then gauge the public reaction to the new lights and examine how they compare to the sodium vapor lamps currently in use.

Because PSE&G own the vast majority of streetlights, the borough would like to get the company involved in the initiative before it moves forward.

Hoffmann explained the LED lights’ appeal. The lights run on fewer kilowatts and last up to 50,000 hours as opposed to the 15,000 hours sodium vapor lamps typically last.

By replacing the current lamps with the more energy efficient LED lights there is potential for the borough to save money in the long run.

“It’s amazing the amount of light the LED produces as opposed to sodium vapor,” Hoffmann said. “It is a fairly new technology, but it seems to be proven.”
