Borough to defend tax assessments
(by Kathryn A. Burger - July 01, 2008)
Park Ridge is investing $20,000 to defend two tax appeals. The Marriott Corporation is appealing its assessment of $21,000,000 that results in a tax levy of $378,000. The Plaza Regency is appealing its assessment of $26,167,200 that results in tax levy of $471,000.
The borough received notice that these entities plan to appeal their assessments which is the first step in what Borough Administrator Gene Vinci said could be “a long process.”
The borough responded to the notice by hiring the firm of McNerney & Associates of Glen Rock to appraise both properties.
Robert Campora, the borough’s tax assessor said the Marriott appealed their assessment two years ago. “We reduced the assessment to the current amount and we don’t feel there is any more room to lower it.” He said McNerney & Associates were successful in defending Saddle Brook’s assessment of the Marriott there. “They won against the same attorney” that is involved with the Park Ridge Marriott’s appeal, he said.
The Plaza Regency health care facility, Camora said, is appealing its assessment for the first time.
Resolutions passed at a recent council meeting, authorizes McNerney & Associates to “prepare a report [appraisal] for an amount not to exceed $7,500” to defend the Plaza Regency assessment and $12,500 for the Park Ridge Marriott.
While the appeal process continues, both businesses will pay taxes based on the borough’s assessment.
