The Park Ridge High School Boys Track & Field team was honored at a recent board of education meeting, at which they were presented with their championship sweatshirts, and the congratulations of the board of education, administrators, parents and friends.

Losing a championship can have repercussions. For some teams, disappointment and a loss of focus can undermine efforts to come back the next season with a renewed sense of determination.

Or, like the Park Ridge Boys Track & Field team, a championship loss can invigorate and inspire a group of athletes to put forth an extraordinary effort to reclaim the top spot.

Chris Brown, the Park Ridge School District ’s athletic director, put it this way, “This team came in determined to get back a championship that eluded them last year.” And, they did.

At a recent board of education meeting, the team was honored for a great season in which the team and its members racked up an impressive list of accomplishments. Brown reeled off the following distinctions:

Season Opener Champions

Comet Relay Champions

Undefeated BCSL Season

BCSL Meet Champions

Bergen County Group D Champions

41 School Record Holders

Sent 17 team members to the Bergen County Meet of Champs

15 members qualified for the State Meet of Champs

10 County Group Champions

6 State Group Champions

6 State Sectional Champions

10 First Team All-BCSL

5 Second Team All-BCSL

5 Honorable Mention All-BCSL

6 members received Bergen County recognition

Summing up the teams successes, Brown said, “The Boys Track program also accomplished a rare feat as they captured the BCSL Championship in cross-country this past fall, the State Sectional title in the winter, and the BCSL and County Championship in the spring. I would say that is some year.”

The team’s head coach, Connie Washnik, was named the Bergen County Scholastic League Olympic Boys and Girls Track & Field Coach of the Year.
