The Pascack Valley Ravens began their June 7 game at
Waldwick
High School with a bang, scoring eight runs in the first two innings. But the team could not hold Waldwick back. Waldwick chipped away at the lead, finally tying the game in the bottom of the seventh before hitting a walk-off grand-slam homerun to win 13-9.
In the top of the first, Max Hourigan’s line drive double to left field, followed by Ryan Hourigan’s infield hit to the shortstop and a stolen base put runners on second and third. Ben Luderer’s ground ball to second scored Max Hourigan and gave the team their first run.
An explosive second inning followed as the team brought in seven more runs to make the lead 8-0. Sean Liddy began with a ground ball single to center, followed by Tommy Jansen’s walk to first, and a bunt single to the pitcher by Alfredo Monagas to load the bases. The Waldwick pitcher allowed a run in when Mike Soumas was walked, scoring Liddy and increasing the lead to two runs. A line drive to left by Max Hourigan scored Jansen and Monagas. Luderer’s infield hit scored Soumas for a fifth run.
The Ravens were not done scoring in the second quite yet as Moran’s line drive to left field scored Max Hourigan. Alex Caravella's two-run homerun capped off the inning and gave the Ravens an 8-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Waldwick scored three runs on a two-run homerun and a line drive double to center that brought in a run from third base.
Pascack
Valley held Waldwick from scoring any additional runs until the bottom of the fifth where they picked up another four to cut down the Ravens’ lead to 8-7.

Pitcher Mike Soumas took the mound in the bottom of the third and completed four innings before being relieved.

The Ravens returned in the top of the sixth with a homerun by Luderer to give his team a 9-7 lead. But in the bottom of the seventh, Waldwick tied the game with two more runs.
With a new pitcher on the mound, Waldwick held
Pascack
Valley in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, Caravella took to the mound to relieve Soumas after four innings of work. But with bases loaded, a grand slam walk-off homerun from Waldwick gave them the 13-9 win.
“The first two innings we came to play. After that we were a little light on the bats. They came, they hit the ball,” said Coach Mike Hourigan. “It’s baseball. It’s a loss.”
