Montvale – Louis Arvanitis, the founder of the McLouis Charitable Fund, has announced the Class of 2008 recipients of $500 scholarship awards. Since its establishment in 1995, the fund has awarded more than 110 scholarships to graduating seniors from Park Ridge, Pascack Hills, PascackValley, and Pearl River, N.Y. high schools. Selection is based on academic achievement and community service.
Arvanitis is also the owner of Eleni’s Pancake House and Family Restaurant, Grand Avenue, Montvale.
Park RidgeHigh School
Park Ridge – Bryan Frasciello, who was on the honor roll for three consecutive years at Park Ridge High, also participated in varsity basketball from 2004 through 2008 and in the school’s soccer marathon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
He now attends the University of Rhode Island and has not yet declared a major.
Park Ridge – Daniel Lee was an honor roll student for his entire high school career at Park Ridge and volunteered at a day care center for four years, tutored every summer and also participated in church retreats and mission trips.
He now attends RutgersUniversity and is pursing health and medical studies.
Park Ridge – Janine St. Jacques is a member of the National Honor Society and was on the honor roll every year. She also received the Academic Renaissance Award in ninth-grade.
She participated in a many school activities including marching band color guard for four years and served as captain as a junior and senior. She was on the Math Team and in the Math Club in her junior and senior years. She was a member of Future Problem Solvers from 10th to 12th grade, and was in the Poetry Club for four years.
She was the co-founder and co-president of “Teen Historians” at the Pascack Historical Society and participated in the club for two years. She also volunteered at the Park RidgeAnimalHospital.
She is attending the University of Vermont and is studying animal science.
PascackHillsHigh School
Montvale - Alison Culvert, a member of the National Honor Society, was on the honor roll at Pascack Hills for four years. She was a varsity cheerleader for four years and was chosen as co-captain of the basketball squad in her junior year and the football squad in her senior year. She played lacrosse for three years.
She was a member of Future Educators of America, and was secretary of her class in her freshman, sophomore and junior years and was executive secretary in her senior year. Her involvement in student government led to her participation in a number of initiatives including the Senior Citizen Dinner and a benefit for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, among other activities.
She was involved in the Interact community service club at the school, “Teens Against Cancer,” and the French Club. She also tutored underclassmen in biology.
She attends the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and is pursuing a degree in secondary education.
Montvale - David Gold participated in varsity wrestling and soccer for three years and baseball for two years while at Pascack Hills.
He is attending Edinboro University, Pa., and plans to pursue course work in health and physical education.
Montvale–Lindsey Jachens, a member of the National Honor Society, has been on the honor roll or high honor roll every semester. In her senior year, she was inducted into the Spanish Honor Society.
She played basketball, lacrosse, and ran cross-country and conducted many basketball clinics for younger students. She was a member of Peers Educating Peers.
She attends RamapoCollege where she is pursuing a course of study in social work and elementary education.
PascackValleyHigh School
River Vale–Elizabeth Egan, a member of the National Honor Society, was also president of the school’s Italian Honor Society and was the recipient of the parent-faculty organization’s Italian Award in her senior year.
She was a member of the Interact Club and the Italian Club for three years and served on the Yearbook and Prom committees in her senior year.
She was active in her church’s youth activities and was on the Retreat Team for the past four years.
She attends The College of New Jersey and pursuing a degree in secondary education/mathematics.
Hillsdale–Angelika Misterek was on the high honor roll at PascackValley for the 2006-2007 school year. She was the recipient of the “You Are a Star” award, given to students who exemplify an outstanding attitude toward education and exhibit good citizenship.
She was a member of the Animal Rights Group and Peer Leadership, among other service groups.
She is attending RutgersUniversity and is pursuing a career in education.
River Vale–Isabella Tang, a member of the National Honor Society, was also a member of the French Honor Society in her senior year. She was on the honor roll or high honor roll all four years at PascackValley.
Her lengthy list of school-related service and academic activities includes membership in the Animal Rights Club; the Peer Leadership Program; the Just About Caring Club; Model UN and the Debate Team. She was also a member of the Golf Team.
She is a junior member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Kim Lau Unit 1291 in New York; has volunteered at the Dr. David Goldberg Childcare Center in Westwood, and volunteered at the Hillsdale Public Library working with children to help them read and write and do arts and crafts.
She is attending St. John’sUniversity and plans to major in psychology.
Pearl RiverHigh School
PearlRiver–Carolyn Lundemo, a member of the National Honor Society, was also a member of the Science Honor Society, the Foreign Language Honor Society, the high honor roll and had perfect attendance at Pearl River High.
She played varsity volleyball and softball and was named All-League Player in both, and was captain of the volleyball team. She also played for Hudson Valley Hurricanes Travel Softball and Lady Comets Travel Softball.
She participated in the school’s jazz band, marching band and chorus and was in the cast of “Barnum.”
She attends MississippiStateUniversity’s College of Architecture.
PearlRiver–Jennifer Wang, a member of the National Honor Society, was a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program; an AP Scholar with Honor; a member of the New York State Science Honor Society and the New York State Math League, as well as many other academic honor societies. She won national honors in the Wordmasters Challenge Competition in grades 9 to 11 and won a number of Departmental Awards, among them in math and English.
She was a member of the Pearl RiverHigh School band, was president of the Science Olympiad; Model UN secretary; and was a volunteer English teacher at Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission’s Assisting Individuals with Disadvantages Summer Program in ; and served as treasurer of the RocklandChineseSchool.
She attends CornellUniversity where she is pursuing a course of study in nutritional sciences.
